Artist Bio

Antony Rieck is a Māori visual artist of Ngāti Whakaue (Te Arawa) descent, based in Nipaluna/Hobart, whose practice centres on painting, with broader experience across photography, installation and sculptural processes. His work explores relationships between whakapapa, memory, identity and place, often bringing personal histories into dialogue with contemporary lived experience.

Rieck brings a longstanding engagement with the visual arts to his studio practice, informed by professional experience in photography and an ongoing exploration of painting and drawing. He will complete a Bachelor of Creative Arts in Fine Art at the end of 2026 and has twice been named to Curtin University’s Vice-Chancellor’s List, recognising academic achievement within the top one per cent of undergraduate students. His recent paintings investigate colour, chroma, fluorescent grounds and complementary relationships as a means of creating psychological and spatial tension. His current work considers how whakapapa may be carried through changing places and experiences, particularly following his relocation to Lutruwita/Tasmania.
